idiots & geniuses
on certain days
life itself
seems to be
one ongoing technical difficulty
which is strange
because, isn’t the universe
supposed to be
the ultimate technology?
one that CAN’T NOT
work perfectly
all of the time?
maybe I’m missing something.
maybe it’s me.
aren’t I, myself,
just like everyone
and everything else,
the product
function
PURPOSE
of the whole thing?
the one reflecting the whole
reflecting the one
ad infinitum
—all that?
so how can it be, exactly,
that everything is so goddamned glitchy,
clunky
in need of endless tinkering
thinking
bickering
over the tiniest details
to the point of stress-lines
and perpetual grumbling
and hair being pulled out
all in order
to just keep surviving
do we really have to be einstein
or hawking
or rain man
to grasp the symmetry
of the whole thing?
indeed
there are idiots & geniuses
on either end, it seems.
connecting
and completing the circle
on some level
that leaves the rest of us
pacing around
in a kind of bland, mediocre suffering
trying to piece together
the component parts
for transcendence
but failing to climb our way out
beyond anything
but a general annoyance
and a gradually increasing bafflement
oh well.
it is what it is, i guess.
and if this IS it,
then so be it.
it could be worse
—like sisyphus and his rock
bumbling his way
up his dumb slope
across eternity
even if it’s not
euphoria
or agony
at the very least
we can count on
an endless variety of problems
even as we get lost in them, daily
if the devil really is in the details
he’s made it simple enough
to sympathize
which makes him, i guess,
not such a bad guy after all
because humility, enforced
could, in certain dimensions, i imagine,
be the least of our worries
and hey,
maybe
missing the point
IS the point.
maybe
our failing to see the humour
in the whole situation
is what makes it so damn funny
think of it:
the devil,
just another peon,
down here dicking around
with the likes of us
while god
the ultimate Genius/Idiot
stretches back
in his stained, patchy recliner,
takes another long pull
off his pipe
and has a good-hearted chuckle
at the ridiculous spectacle
of the absurd, asinine perfection
of our technical difficulties
playing out
on his massive
precisely calibrated
endlessly gratifying
wide screen TV.
